ZICTA RETREAT IN BATTLE TO TAKE DOWN INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS

The Zambian Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) have ordered five top service providers to cease their operations after their failure to renew licenses that allow them to function in the country.  This was confirmed by  ZICTA director of public relations, Lotty Kakubo , earlier this month.
Some of the service providers affected by this situation are Zamnet Communications which is one of the leading internet service provider in Zambia. Others are, Realtime technology Alliance limited, Coppernet solution Limited, Microlink Technologies and pronet Zambia.
Mr. Kakubo mentioned that the decision was made on the basis that the service providers had breached the Information and Technology act number 15 which stated clearly that operations of electronic communications network  were barred from functioning without a license in Zambia.
Non of the service providers have given concrete responses to the problem when addressed by the press but growing fear that Zambia’s leading internet provider is been expressed by many citizens of the country.  This has led the Zambian authorities to reverse the decision to completely prohibit  internet access in the country.  Leaving only three running internet service providers.
